Based on an analysis of logical proposition, the theory of Port-Royal redivides traditional parts of speech into 2 groups: the words which represent the object of the thought and those which represent the form of the thought. The philosophical grammarians of the 17th century such as Girard and Du Marsais continue to apply this logical criterion in the analysis of language, The English tradition of grammatical analysis is less logical. The attempts in English grammars to apply the concept of number which is the criterion applied initially by Ramus, and the theory of Wilkins based on the analysis of semantic operations. They leave the logical framework and announce the advent Harris' theory which is based on the degree of meaning. His theory does not explain what the words mean but how they mean.
