유교의 행위이론

The Action Theory of Confucianism

본 논문은 유교의 행위이론을 주역의 음양논리를 통하여 이해하려 한 것이다. 서구 사회학의 행위관은 대체로 주의주의적 관점과 행동주의적 관점을 바탕으로 하는 반면, 유교의 행위관은 현실주의적, 시중적時中的, 명분론적名分論的 관점을 특징으로 하고 있다. 유교의 행위관은 주역의 정正ㆍ응應ㆍ중中의 음양논리를 통해 이해할 때 행위의 의미가 보다 선명히 드러난다. 즉, 주역의 괘에서 음양 효의 당위當位는 행위자와 행위상황과의 관계구조의 원리며, 음양 효의 정응正應은 행위자와 행위대상 간의 상호작용의 원리가 된다. 그리고 음양 효의 중中은 행위자의 행위준칙이라 할 수 있다. 이러한 음양논리에 바탕한 유교적 행위가 서구 근대적 행위에 갖는 의의를 간추리면 다음과 같다. (1) 서구의 근대적 행위론이 주의주의적, 행동주의적 정당성에 근거하는 반면, 유교의 행위론은 천일합일에 근거한 도덕적 실천을 행위의 정당성의 근거로 삼고 있다. (2) 유교의 행위론은 명분에 따른 합리성을 중시하기 때문에 도구적 합리성에 따른 서구 근대적 행위의 문제점을 극복하는 데 의의가 있다. (3) 유교적 행위는 관계지향적 행위를 중시하기 때문에 서구의 근대 개인주의적 행위에서 초래되는 문제점을 극복하는 데 의의가 있다. (4) 유교의 행위론은 중용을 원리로 하기 때문에 서구 근대적 행위론이 갖는 추상적, 중심주의적, 기계적 행위원리에 현실적 생명력을 부여하는 데 의의를 갖는다.

This paper attempts to understand the Action Theory of Confucianism through Yin-Yang theory of Chu Book of Changes. While the Action Theory of western sociology is based on the perspectives of voluntarism and behaviorism, the Action Theory of Confucianism can be characterized to have realistic, justifiable perspectives. The Action Theory of Confucianism shows the meaning of action clearly when it is explained by Yin-Yang Theory of Correctness, Conformity, and Mean. In other words, in Gua (hexagrams) of Book of Changes, the correct position of Yin-Yang Yao (line) is the principle of relational structure between an agent and an environment. And the correct conformity of Yin-Yang Yao (line) is the principle of interaction between an agent and an object. The golden mean of Yin-Yang Yao (line) can be called the rule to action of an agent. The Confucian action based on Yin-Yang theory has the following meanings to modern western actions. (1) While the modern western Action Theory is grounded on the volitional and behavioristic justice, the Confucian Action theory has its foundation of justice on moral realization based on the harmony of man with nature. (2) Because the Confucian Action theory regards rationality from moral duty as important, it can solve the problems of modern western actions that are from instrumental rationality. (3) The emphasis of Confucian Action theory on the relational action can solve the problems caused by modern western individualistic actions. (4) The principle of golden mean in Confucian Action Theory can provide the abstract, central, and mechanical principle of modern western Action Theory with realistic vividness.
