A Study on the Improvement of Education System in the Ship - Board Life Training Dormitory

The ship-board life training dormitory, which is offered to all the students of the college of maritime sciences in Korea Maritime University at the expense of the state, occupies an important position on the education of maritime affairs by training knowledge and basic human nature such as partnership, leadership and endurance required to the merchant marine officer. Although the education system of the college of maritime sciences and ship-board life training dormitory has been changed according to the needs of the times since the year 1990, most of the students in the maritime field are in disorder recently due to the international trend in the employment of merchant marine officers and the change of the military service law on the merchant marine officer. In addition, there are some problems about education staff, education programs, facilities and welfare in the dormitory. Thus human resources, material support and human nature education system should be required to solve the problems. In conclusion, this study provides several schemes on the improvement of education system in the ship-board life training dormitory as follows; Firstly, the programs on human nature education by individual scholastic years are proposed. Secondly, plans for small-group organization with priority given to individual faculties which is required for the faculty professors to participate in the dormitory education and organization by team which is formed by upper grade and lower grade students are given. Lastly, it is suggested that the credits/units on practical education in the dormitory should be introduced.
