Wage Instability in the Korean Labor Market after the IMF Economic Crisis

The rapidly increasing income inequality in the Korean labor market after the economic crisis has been shown in the series of the studies. And a debate has now ensued concerning the cause of this phenomenon; whether this is the result of general shifts in supply or demand caused by skill-biased technological change. These literatures are based on the annual cross-sectional data, so that they can explain the long-term (permanent) changes in the wage. However, they can not explain the rapid change in the wage which is arisen in the short periods, that is, within 4 years in the labor market after the crisis which can caused a part of the long-term trends in the income inequality. This study focus on the instability in the wage in order to explain this phenomenon; the rapidly change in the wage which is arisen in the short period. However, this study can not measure how much the wages are instabilized after the crisis because of the absence of the panel data before the crisis. Instead, the study focus on whose wage are the most instabilized after the crisis. The results are as follows: The involuntary job changed in the different industry from the former, the low educated, 40-50 years old men in the irregular job status.
