This paper empirically investigates the determinants of interregional disparity caused in China based on provincial data. In particular, we take a closer look at the relationship between interregional growth disparity and the distribution of China's foreign direct investment inflows. The study finds that the contributions of FDI inflows to growth are as important, if not more, than other determinants of growth. That is, the distribution of FDI inflows has been a primary factor behind the disparity of regional growth in China, and in fact, FDI inflows have had a significant effect on the convergence speed of provincial growth rates. Our empirical estimations further suggest that international trade brought by FDI firms is an important contributor enhancing China's international trade. The geographical location and preferential policies executed by the central government has also played an important role in China's regional growth.
