Korean economists" leanings : Abalysis of 6 major dailys

This paper aims to analyze and classify the leanings of Korean Economists. The influence of economists as an opinion leader is becoming more and more important. In particular, influences of economists' writings in columns and editorials of major dailys are preponderant. To analyze the leanings of Korean economists, we selected 585 editorials and columns of 6 major dailys' (Chosuu, DongA, Joongang, Hangyere, Maeilkyuugje, Hankookkyungje) during July 17th-October 16th 2000. Every writing is given a note between 1 and 10 according to 3 categories, namely theoretical bias (market vs state intervention), level of coherence and consistency, attitude on the government's policy (pro and con). Using Ward's clustering analysis, we can classify Korean economists into 3, 4, and 5 groups. Among them, clustering into 4 groups is most relevant. These 4 groups could be named according to their main characteristics: 1st, extremely market pursuing group(16.5%); 2nd, pro-government market friendly group(20.9%); 3rd, anti-government market friendly group(19.6%); 4th, market reservation group(42.8%).
