The Changes in Communication Expenditure Patterns of Urban Working Households During 1991-1999

The purpose of this study was to find the changes of communication expenditure patterns for last 10 years(1991-1999) through 1) marginal propensity to consume, 2) income elasticity, and 3) influencing factors on consumption among urban working households. The data was drawn from' Annual Report on the Family Income and Expenditure Survey' by National Statistical Office, Republic of Korea from 1991-1999. For data analysis, frequency, percentile, mean, and multiple regression analysis were utilized by the SAS window program. The major results were as follows; 1) the level of expenditure and portion of expenditure in communication have increased during 1991-1999. The level of expenditure was found to be 16,910 Won in 1991 and 54,472 Won in 1999. And portion of expenditure was found ta be 1.9% in 1991 and 4.0% in 1999. 2) MPC has increased during 1991-1999. MPC was found to be 0.0046(1,000 Won) and has increased dramatically since 1995. 3) Income elasticity was found to be between 0 and 1 during 1991-1999. Especially, for cellular phone income elasticity was found to be over 1 in 1995 and has changed ta below 1 since 1996. 3) Income and number of employed family members were found to be the most important factors influencing communication expenditures. Income factor showed positive relationship with he level of expenditure, whereas negative relationship with portion of expenditure. Number of employed family members factor showed positive relationship with portion of expenditure.
