The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between parents' emotional expression and their children's emotional competence. Specifically, research questions addressed in this study were as follows: 1) Is there any relationship between parents' emotional expression and their children's emotional competence? 2) Is there any relationship between parents' emotional expression and their children's emotional competence according to children' gender? Subjects for this study were 236 five-year-old children and their 472 parents (236 mothers and 236 fathers), all of whom were sampled from 20 classes of 17 public or private kindergartens in Chongju-si and Daejon-si. Children's emotional competence was measured by the questionnaires constructed by the researcher and parents' positive expression was measured by the questionnaire, a revised Korean version of Halberstadt's (986) Family Emotional Expressiveness Questionnaire (FEQ). Data collected from the participants were analyzed with Pearson's coefficient of correlations. Results found in this study were as follows: First, there was positive con-elation between fathers' emotional expression and their children's emotional competence. Second, there was positive correlation between mothers' emotional expression and their children's emotional competence. Third, there was positive correlation between parents' emotional expression and their boys' emotional competence. Forth, there was positive correlation between parents' emotional expression and their girls' emotional competence.
