This study is an attempt to establish the improvement process of indoor visual environment. The purpose of this study are to evaluate the illumination condition of a kindergarten and to propose the plan for improvement of indoor visual environment. The field measurement on the illumination and the interview with teachers were carried out at a kindergarten in Seoul. This survey was taken on 1st of May, 1999. The illumination level of the eastern classroom in the first floor (242~288 lux) was lower than standard (500 lux) but the illumination uniformity (1/2~1/3) was better condition than standard (1/7~1/5). The illumination level of the underground gymnasium (105 lux) was lower than standard(300 lux). The illumination level of the western classroom in the first floor (435~992 lux) was higher than standard, but the illumination uniformity (1/15 ~1/8) was worse condition than standard. The illumination level of the western classroom in second floor (850~1575 lux) was higher than standard, but the illumination uniformity (1/17~1/10) was worse condition than standard. It was found that the eastern classroom in the first floor and the underground gymnasium were low condition in illumination level, but the western spaces were bad condition in illumination uniformity.
