The Relationships between Father's Emotional Expression and Mother's Affective Rearing Behavior

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between father's emotional expression and mother's affective rearing behavior. Specifically, research questions addressed in this study were as follows: 1) Are there any differences of father's emotional expression by related variables such as age and final degree? 2) Are there any differences of mother's affective rearing behavior by related variables such as age, final degree, and job? 3) Are there any relations between father's emotional expression and mother's affective rearing behavior. Subjects for this study were 391 mothers and 391 fathers, all of whom were sampled in Chongju-si and Daejon-si. Father's emotional expression was measured by the questionnaire, a revised Korean version of Halberstadt's (1986) 'Family Emotional Expressiveness Questionnaire (FEEQ)'. And mother's affective rearing behavior was measured by the questionnaires constructed by Woo(2002). Data collected from the participants were analyzed with t-test and coefficient of correlations. Results found in this study were as follows: First, no significant differences of emotional expression were found by father's age. And significant differences of positive emotional expression were found by father's final degree, but no significant differences of negative dominant and negative non-dominant emotional expression were found by father's final degree, Second, no significant differences of affective rearing behavior were found by mother's age, but significant differences of affective rearing behavior were found by mother's final degree and job. Third, there were positive correlations between father's positive emotional expression and mother's affective rearing behavior, but there were not correlations between father's negative dominant and negative non-dominant emotional expression and mother's affective rearing behavior.
