The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between parents' emotional expressiveness and their children's social competence. Specifically, research Questions addressed in this study were as follows: 1) Is there any relationship between parents' emotional expressiveness and their children's social competence? 2) Is there any relationship between parents I emotional expressiveness and their children's social competence according to children's gender? Subjects for this study were 310 five-year-old children and their 620 parents (310 mothers and 310 fathers), all of whom were sampled from 20 classes of 23 public or private kindergartens in Chongju-si and Daejon-si. Children's social competence was measured by the questionnaires constructed by the researcher and parents' emotional expressiveness was measured by the questionnaire, a revised Korean version of Halberstadt's(986) Family Emotional Expressiveness Questionnaire (FEQ). Data collected from the participants were analyzed with Pearson I s coefficient of correlations. Results found in this study were as follows: First, there was positive correlation between mothers I positive emotional expressiveness and their children I s social competence, but negative correlation between mothers' dominant-negative emotional expressiveness and their children's social competence. Second, there was positive correlation between fathers I positive emotional expressiveness and their children's social competence, but negative correlation between fathers' dominant-negative emotional expressiveness and their children's social competence.
