The changes of microbial numbers and activities during the bioremediation of beachsand contaminated with recalcitrant Bunker C fuel oil were investigated using microcosms. The numbers of total hydrocarbon degrading bacteria were rapidly increased and reached to 10cells/g sand, which was 10⁴-l0?? times of increase. The numbers of aromatic hydrocarbon degraders showed similar trends but 1/10 less numbers. The aerobic heterotrophs jumped from 10?? cells/g to 1O?? cells/g during 2 weeks of incubation. FDA direct count which stained only metabolically active bacteria also showed similar level and changes. The FDA hydrolysis activity was doubled by bioaugmentation and dehydrogenase activity was increased at 5-6 times than control samples. Although the microbial numbers and activities in contaminated beachsand were not coincided exactly with the removal pattern of Bunker C fuel oil, this study showed the positive effects of bioaugmentation of microbial consortium
