An Enhanced Explicit Rate Congestion Control Algorithm for a Multimedia ATM Network

The ABR service has been designed to increase link utilization of the ATM network and to support highly burst traffic applications. The ATM forum has adapted the closed loop and rate-based congestion control algorithm as the standards for ABR services to regulate the cell transmit rate of sources from the network and to minimize their cell lose. The noble congestion control algorithm, called as ERICA(Explicit Rate Indication for Congestion Avoidance), has been introduced[1]. In this paper, we examine the performance of ERICA in terms of robustness, fairness, and LAN/WAN applications, and then present an enhanced max-min scheme to improve its performance. We also simulate it and analyze its performance by comparing with ERICA algorithm.
