When the anoxic tank was placed in front of the aeration tanks in the activated precess for the treatment of the slaughterhouse wastewater, 68% of total Kjeldahl nitrogen was removed as a result of denitrification. To examine whether the bacteria, which were isolated from the slaughterhouse wastewater, have capability of nitrate removal through nitrate reduction under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions, batch culture test was carried out. The denitrification activities of the isolated bacteria (S-1, S-2, S-3, S-4) were not influenced by the presence of oxygen. Among them, the isolate S-1 showed the highest denitrification activity of 33.5 g NO₃-N reduced/g biomass in the nitrate medium under aerobic condition. Denitrification yields of the bacteria were low in the minimal medium because of the exhaustion of carbon source as electron donor. If sufficient carbon source is supplies, the denitrification yield of the isolate bacteria could be increased. For the efficient removal of nitrogen from the wastewater, the aerobic denitrifying bacteria might be more important than the denitrifying anoxic reactor which needs additional capital and maintenance costs.
