A Survey on Driver's Attitude towards Traffic Safety and Traffic Rules

본 조사는 6개 도시의 1300여명의 운전자를 대상으로 하여 도로교통과 관련된 여러 사항들에 대한 의견을 묻고자 실시되었다. 대부분의 응답자들이 거주지역의 전반적인 교통분위기를 불안하다고 평가하였으며, 교통사고에 휘말릴 가능성과 위험성이 높다고 응답하였다. 교통사고의 원인으로는 과속, 신호위반, 끼어들기, 난폭운전 등이 많이 언급되었고, 교통사고 다발지점의 정리 등이 많이 지적되었다. 또한 응답자의 ¼이상이 교통법규가 비현실 혹은 비합리적이어서 고칠 부분이 있다고 응답하였다. 교통안전에 필요한 사항은 스스로의 경험을 통해 터득하는 경우가 과반수였고, 운전교육시에는 도로주행에 관련된 기술뿐 아니라, 간단한 차량점검 및 정비요령, 기초적인 물리학 지식 등도 교육되어야 하는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 교통안전시설에 대한 정부의 투자가 더 많이 이루어져야 하며, 교통범칙금은 교통안전을 위한 교육과 시설에 투자해야 한다는 반응을 보였다. 우리나라의 사고율이 다른 선진국에 비해 높은 이유로는 안전수칙 무시와 열악한 작업환경이 많이 지적되었고, 사고를 방지하기 위해서는 지속적인 교육과 홍보, 작업환경의 개선이 필요하다는 응답이 많았다.

This survey was conducted to find out opinions of drivers on traffic envimnment. About 1300 respondents from 6 cities participated in tl1is survey. Most respondents answered that the traffic environment of residential areas is not safe and that people are at a high risk to be involved in traffic accidents. The drivers pointed out speeding, violation of traffic signals, cutting-in, and violent driving as the cause of traffic accidents. For prevention of traffic accidents, they thought that improvement and addition of traffic safety facilities, promotion of traffic safety consciousness, and clearing-up of hjgh risk area are needed. More than three quarters of the respondents said that many traffic regulations need to be revised because they don't reflect the actual situations. More than half of the respondents learned on their own what to do to drive safely. The survey shows that not only driving skills, but also simple check-ups, repairing skills, and how the car operates should be taught. The government should use more fund on traffic safety facilities and traffic fines imposed on traffic violation should be invested to education and facilities for traffic safety. As reasons for Korea's higher traffic and industrial accident rates than those of other developed countries, disregarding safety rules and poor work-environment were mentioned, and to prevent these accidents, continuous education and campaign as well as improvement of work-environment are needed.
