규칙에 의한 처리와 유사성에 의한 처리가 범주화에 미치는 영향

Roles of Rule-based Processing and similarity-based processing on Categorization

이 연구는 범주화가 규칙과 유사성의 상호작용에 의해 설명될 수 있는지를 검토하였다. 우선 범주가 가족유사성에 의해 정의되더라도 규칙에 의한 범주화가 일어날 수 있으며, 범주가 정의적 속성에 의해 정의되더라도 사례와의 유사성이 범주화에 영향을 미친다. 또한 범주를 정의하는 규칙이 현저할 경우에는 규칙에 의한 범주화가 일어나는데 비해 자극의 지각적 고유성이나 응집성이 증가하면 사례와의 유사성이 범주화에 더 큰 영향을 미친다. 따라서 규칙과 유사성이 모두 범주화에 영향을 미치며, 두 지식의 상호작용에 자극, 학습과제 규칙의 특성 등이 영향을 미친다. 마지막으로 규칙과 유사성의 상호작용을 설명하기 위한 이론적 대안으로서 일화-처리견해가 소개되었다.

This review discussed whether categorization could be better explained by interactions between rule and similarity than either one of them. It was shown that a novel exemplar can be categorized by a rule in a family resemblance category and the rule application can be affected by similarities between learned exemplars and transfer exemplars in a well-defined category. Moreover, the rule-based processing occurred when rules were salient but the similarity-based processing occurred when perceptual distinctiveness of stimulus' attributes were high. Therefore, rules and similarities had their own roles in categorization; interactions between two knowledges were influenced by types of stimulus, learning tasks, and rules. Finally an episodic-processing view was introduced as a theoretical alternative to explain interactions between rules and similarities.
