A Study on the ASEAN Trade Pattern in a Three-Commodity Model

This paper constructs a three-commodity model of trade with three specific factors of production. The model has a resource-intensive sector which employs specific natural resources and two manufacturing sectors employing capital specific to the manufacturing sectors; a labor-intensive and a capital-intensive sector. Labor is assumed to be mobile in all three sectors. This model is particularly appropriate to analyze trade patterns of the ASEAN countries which are abundantly endowed with natural resources. The determination of trade patterns in this model is shown and some parametric changes such as falling prices of the primary commodities are attempted. It is also shown that, theoretically, the product composition of their exports would not have to follow the usual pattern of trade in developing countries; exporting primary commodities at the early stage of industrialization and shifting to labor-intensive commodities and capital-intensive commodities with rising capital accumulations.
