A Study on the Strategic Evaluation of Automation Manufacturing Technology

The impact of investment and appraisal methods on advance manufacturing technology contribution to the competitiveness of a business is clearly significant. If high hurdle rate are imposed, then it will invariably lead to a decreasing capital investment. In times of capital rationing the argument put forward to support high return on investment is that they facilitate the process of creaming off the more attractive investment proposals and hence enable a company to equate the best opportunities with available funds. But this line of argument fails to assess the relevance of investment proposals in the context of on agreed business strategy. Hence a more promising approach is to recognize the strategic character of investment in manufacturing technology : This article suggest that manager view the primary objective of strategic investment as establishing sustainable competitive edge. Creating competitive edge requires a matching of internal strengths with external opportunities in order to achieve the firms strategic goals. With a strategic approach to manufacturing technology, the optimal technology for business is contingent on the firm's strategic goal, its avaliable resource and product-market environment.
