In the 1990s, the pattern of Japan's foreign direct investment(FDI) experienced a great change, concentrating on manufacturing sector into East Asia. The increasing FDI to East Asia parallelled increase in her two-way trade with East Asian developing economies, and consequently, in the intra-regional trade in the region. This was due to vigorous technological innovation and industrial restructuring. It enabled Japanese firms to generate a variety of new manufactured products for exports, and also enabled them to transfer standardised old technology to East Asia. Under the dynamic change, Japan's FDI and trade were complementary through the greater intra-firm, intra-industry trade between Japanese firms and their subsidiaries in East Asia.
