Empirical Study on Determinant Factors of Intra-firm Trade

The purpose of this study is to have a test on the theory of intra-firm trade through the empirical analysis on the determinant factors of intra-firm trade by foreign direct investment firms in Korea. This study focuses on the examination of characteristic and status about the intra-firm trade by foreign direct investment firms and on the findings of the efficient ways for enlarging the economic effects of foreign direct investment. More various analystic methods are adapted in this study and the comparative analyses are done according to industry, firm size and items with basis on statistical data about intra-firm trade. This analysis on determinant factors influencing level of intra-firm trade focused on the intra-firm trade theory through theoretical models and hypotheses. According to the result of this empirical study, the following suggestions and statements are taken. First, the intra-firm trade of technology and capital intensive goods is not relatively active. This fact means that the export-inducing effect is less effective. Second, the foreign direct investment firms don't have the special advantageous factor with great merits of internalization in foreign trade. Third, when the foreign direct investment firms enlarge the overseas production under the condition of not-having the special advantageous factors, it is possible that the international balance of payment in the intra-firm trade will result in unbalance in terms of the long-term payment.
