A Study on Performance Evaluation Systems in Consideration of Korean Socio-Cultural Characteristics

A great amount of care must be taken when we design performance evaluation systems because they have a lot of effect on employees' behavior. Since performance evaluation is usually linked to monetary and/or nonmonetary compensation, employees are very sensitive to the structure of performance evaluation systems. The purpose of the systems is to motivate employees to contribute to the achievement of the company's goal. Performance evaluation systems should be designed in such a way to encourage employees' motivation. Here, employees' sociocultural chracteristics play and important role. Since Korean sociocultural characteristics differ from those of Americans or Japanese, performance evaluation systems should differ accordingly. In this study, I investigate Korean sociocultural characteristics from previous studies, and develop performance evaluation systems that fit the Korean characteristics. I also devel-op five hypotheses to test the fits between the systems and the characteristics. The test of fits are left to future studies.
