With steep appreciation of the yen since 1985 and the resulting rapid increase in Japanese foreign direct investment(FDI) toward East Asian developing economies(EADE), there has been a significant change in the level and composition of its imports: huge shift toward manufactured products from EADE. Japan needs to play greater role as markets for as well as supplier of FDI to EADE, however, taking their economic crisis onto account.
