Economic Effects of Port on Inchon Economy

To maximize geo-logistical advantage of Inchon as a port, we first need to analyze the effects of port on Inchon Economy. Three channels of the economic effects on Inchon Area can be identified. Those are direct channel, indirect channel and basic channel. Even in the direct channel, the economic effect can be seen through various factors. The most visible factor is the role of the port-related activities. This paper focuses on the examination of the role of 'port-related economic activities' in Inchon economy. Port-related economic activities are classified into three categories, which are 'port-related industry', 'port-directly dependent industry', and 'port-indirectly dependent industry'. Impacts of those are measured for three different years, 1989, 1991, 1996 and the results of each year are compared each another. The trend shows that contribution of the port-related economic activities to Inchon economy has decreased. The results suggest the role of port-related activities in Inchon is important. We believe the efficiency of the role is related to the management/governance structure. In the efficiency of the role is related to the management/ governance structure. In the light of world-wide privatization trend of the port management/governance structure, several possible ways of changing the structure of Inchon port are examined in the paper. Then, tentative suggestions concerning the structural change was made based on rather 'intuitive' analysis.
