This study investigates the compatibility between Korean firms' corporate culture and their performance evaluation systems. Korean firms' corporate culture was characterized by harmony and confucian value. But after the IMF crisis, many firms begin to adopt western style performance evaluation systems which are not compatible with traditional corporate culture. Corporate culture consists of seven elements; shared value, strategy, structure, system, staff, skill, and style. Performance evaluation system is a part of the fourth element, and it should be compatible with the rest of elements. However, if a firm wants to change its corporate culture, the performance evaluation system plays an active role by motivating corporate members to support and share the value imbedded in the new corporate culture. Therefore, the compatibility between corporate culture and performance evaluation systems should be judged dynamically. When a firm moves from one corporate culture to another, the corporate culture elements may be incompatible temporarily. But if a firm adopts a well designed performance evaluation system, then the elements will become compatible soon.
