Trade Measures for Environmental Protection and Likely Issues at Green Round

In connection with the Green Round expected to take place in near future, the paper looks into GATT/WTO provisions and GATT panel decisions to examine how and to what extent the notion of environmental protection is treated under the GATT/WTO regime. It then reviews trade measures currently available under major international environmental treaties as well as those provided in domestic legislation in the developed countries. In the light of such review, the paper projects major issues likely to emerge during the upcoming Green Round and their implications to Korea. It further discusses ways of reconciling the trade regime and the environmental protection regime and their likelihood of success under the upcoming Green Round. Also attempted are recommendations for the Korean Government in dealing with those issues.
