An Essay on the Comparative Study of the Nonprofit Sector: Beyond the Johns Hopkins Comparative Nonprofit Sector Project

비영리부문에 대한 연구는 실증적 연구보다는 미국의 사례를 중심으로 하는 이론적 연구와 국가별 사례연구가 주류를 이루었으나 1990년부터 시작된 Johns Hopkins 비교연구를 통해서 체계적인 비교, 경험적 자료의 축적, 이론적 설명 등에 상당한 진전이 있었다 그럼에도 불구하고 각 국가의 역사적 특성을 간과하고 지나치게 경직된 개념정의를 적용하였으며 주로 경제적 비중을 측정함으로써 이론적 설명과 검증에도 한계가 있었다 본 연구는 보다 바람직한 비교연구를 위한 개념과 측정방법을 제시하고, 이론적 설명들에 대한 비판과 유럽 4개국의 역사적 경험을 중심으로 비교연구 접근방법을 제시한다.

Research on the nonprofit sector was mainly concerned with the theoretical aspects and single case studies However, the Johns Hopkins Comparative Nonprofit Sector Project Since 1990 has made a remarkable advance in the accumulation of comparative empirical data and theoretical explanations by the coordinated comparative studies Nevertheless, they show certain limitations in theoretical explanations and empirical support due to their rigid conceptual definition and the economic measurement of the sector This essay tries to suggest the better approach to the comparative nonprofit study based on a brief review of the historical experiences of four European countries.
