E-Business in the Korean Construction Industry: Trends and Prospects

The primary purpose of this study is to survey and analyze the current achievements and limitations of "e-biz"(e-business) activities in the Korean construction industry. This study also pays attentions on the prospects and potentials of e-biz in construction and related fields, and on the strategies for enhancing and progressing e-biz in the fields. In order to get a grip of those, this study searched B2B sites which were found in the Internet, and identified 125 e-biz sites-25 e-marketplace sites. 21 e-procurement sites. 19 e-shop sites. 38 information provider sites, 9 ASP(Application Service Provider) sites, and 13 other sites. Many of e-marketplace sites (multiple suppliers and multiple customers for construction materials and equipments) surveyed in this study are having difficulties in sales and marketing, while few e-marketplace sites succeeded in making profit-the amount of sales varies from none to 31 billion Won, Most of the customers(buyers, mostly contractors) find e-marketplace as useful not only in saving the budget but also in enhancing effectiveness of procurement process. In such a regard, the e-marketplace sites are expected to grow fast in the next 3 or 4 years. E-procurement sites are working very actively. This study surveyed 18 e-procurement sites. and most of them admitted the advantages of electronic purchase such as cheaper price. more effective and transparent process. and thus enhancement of productivity. Also, most of the sites are planning not only to increase the portion of e-purchase in the near future, but also to expand the sites' function to e-bidding for sub-contract. and domestic systems like ERP(Enterprise Resource Planning) and KMS(Knowledge Management System). The others sites are not very actively operated so far. Information provider sites. in general, have not succeeded in establishing a suitable profit model yet. ASP and e- PM(Project Management) sites are still struggling in forming the market which the Korean contractors have not noticed yet. The other sorts of e-biz sites are facing the similar hurdles in operating their businesses. that is, the immature market(demands) and lacking establishment of stable business models. The shortcomings of e-biz in construction industry include lack of understanding e-biz applications, lack of standardized e-catalog(for materials and equipment), immature certification and insurance system for buyers and sellers, etc. Also, in technological aspects, e-biz solutions for e-marketplace and e-PM reveals some defects because e-biz developers might not fully understand the real process of construction business. In addition to these, there is seen a ({ digital divide" between big companies and medium-small ones in application of e-biz solutions. Medium and small companies are less aggressive in adopting e-biz solutions, and in turn they could lose the relative competitiveness which might be enhanced by utilization of e-biz. E-biz in construction industry as well as the whole industry will grow fast in spite of the recent dispute on New Economy. Buyers and sellers who are involved in e-marketplace would increase and expand e-biz because of its benefits. The core of e-biz is restructuring of current system to a more efficient one rather than a new source of profit or a new business area. The methodologies and applications of e-biz are incessantly shifting to find more innovative system Hence. recently the current e-Commerce seems to evolve to U c-Commerce" which is based on collaboration between e-biz entities and restructured(in e-biz way) corporations. In the e-biz field in the Korean construction industry, such a trend is seen as many of e-PM, ASP, IP(Information Provider) sites are trying to merge and to form alliances.
