This study was done to define nursing diagnoses and to validate the defining characteristics for patients with cerebrovascular diease. The subjects for this study were 34 case reports by nursing students. Data collection was done from Mar. to Dec in 1998 and Mar to Dec in 1999. The instrument was nursing diagnose sheets using in K Nursing college. The results of this study were summarized as follows. Twenty nursing diagnoses related to patients with cerebrovascular diease were defined. The diagnoses that occurred mostly were 'Pain' 'Impaired physical mobility' 'Sleep pattern disturbance' 'Constipation' 'Anxiety' 'Self-care deficit' 'Impaired skin integrity' 'Altered urinary elimination' 'Diversional activity deficit' 'Risk for disuse syndrome' And most of them were classified in the 'Exchanging' 'Perceiving' 'Moving' 'Relating' human response pattern. Titles and defining characteristics on the NANDA list of approved diagnoses were most frequently used by student nurses. And many of related factors used by student nurses were on the NANDA approved list. This results suggest that titles and defining characteristics on NANDA list of approved diagnoses are very useful in cerebrovascular disease, but related factors are very broad in scope. So it needs to be specified in the area of related factors. Further study and research are needed to develope the NANDA list in adult health nursing Recommendations are made 1 It is necessary to use verified defining characteristics of nursing diagnoses in clinical practice 2 It is necessary to define related factors which define each diagnoses in this study 3 It is necessary to develope of standardized nursing care plans which include defined signs and symptoms 4 Further study and research are needed to develope the nursing diagnoses of each of major disease in clinical setting
