The Relationship between Organizational Commitment and Nursing performance of Hospital Nurses

This study was carried out to identify the relationship between organizational commitment and nursing performance of hospital nurses. The subject were 500 hospital nurses working at several general hospitals in Masan City, Korea, Data were collected by self-reporting questionnaire from Nov.17 to Nov.30, 1998. The data were analyzed with frequency, percentage, mean & standard deviation, t-test, Anova, Pearson's correlation and stepwise multiple regression using SPSS/PC+ The findings of this study were as follows: 1. Mean score of organizational commitment of the subjects was 62.37(scale score= 3.28). In age(F=10.23, p<.001), marital status(t=-3.18, p<.01), experience in current hospital(F=5.25, p<001), and currently working unit(F=4.23, p<.01) of the subjects, there were significant differences organizational commitment. 2. Mean score of nursing performance of the subjects was 109.60(scale score= 4.06). In age(F=6.75, p<.001), marital status(t=-3.02, p<.01), current hospital experience(F=5.32, p<001), current position(t=2.36, p<01) and salary status(F=7.28, p<.001) of the subjects, there were significant differences in the nursing performance. 3. There were significant, but very slight relationship between the organizational commitment and nursing performance(r= .175, p<.01). 4. Predictability for the nursing performance with the personal characteristics and organizational commitment of the subjects were about 16%.
