Hypertexuality and Spiritual Union in Tennyson's In Memoriam

This essay is an attempt to inquire into the artistic beauty Alfred Lord Tennyson is believed to succeed in portraying in one of his masterpieces, In Memoriam, with two artistic strategies, hypertextuality and the mystical union. The former is ubiquitous throughout the present poem, deconstructing the poetic structure and leading to an antilinear, multi-sequential poem. And the latter functions as both the key motive and theme to enter into the mystical portrait he would sometimes experience after the bereavement with Hallam. These two crucial motives are collaborated to make the supernatural world of meditations in which Hallam might be overlapped with the image of Jesus Christ. The moment Hallam would try to retain the Christ image, he, again, returns not to a presence but to a vivid absence, becoming the object of desire in psychoanalytic terms to make the rhetoric of silence.
