In more recent times, with changing philosophies of teaching writing in both Ll and L2 settings, the possible uses of literature in teaching writing has become an ongoing controversial issue in the field. In fact, the writing teachers constantly face curricular decisions about whether and how to use literature in writing classes, This paper summarizes arguments for and against the use of literature in writing classes and outlines the history of the controversy in both fields. The authors also provide a discussion of the nature of the relationship between reading and writing skills, questioning whether or not reading literature serves as input that contributes to the acquisition of writing skills. We conclude that L2 writing teachers who decide to use literature in their classes still have several broad curricular decisions left before choosing specific literature.
