A Study of Intermediate ‘ㅅ' in Hunmong-jahoe

In this thesis, I intended to clarify the orthographic rule and phonemic function of Intermediate 'ㅅ' inscribed between Saegim(Chinese written character) and sino-korean pronunciation in Hunmong-jahoe(訓蒙字會). To prove my assertion, I took the logical procedures as below. 1) I presented Intermediate ‘ㅅ’ orthographic rule focused on Intermediate ‘ㅅ’ inscribed between Saegim and sino-korean pronunciation in Hunmong-jahoe. Intermediate' A' is inscribed as a final consonant of Saegim in the 챠rcumstances preceding Saegim is ended in a vowel or voiced consonant. Therefore, orthographic rule is identical with that of Middle Korean. 2) I interpreted a phonemic function of Intermediate ‘ㅅ’. Intermediate ‘ㅅ’ inscribed in Hummong-jahoe implodes the proceeding Saegim to protect being voiced like that of Middle Korean. 3) But, It is a peculiarity of Hunmong-jahoe that Intermediate ‘ㅅ’ is frequently inscribed between Saegim and sino-korean pronunciation. I observed that Saegim often contains sino-korean pronunciation in sino-korean study book. Accordingly, I concluded that Intermediate' A' is used to prevent homophony conflicts due to successively interconnected Saegim (included sino-korean pronunciation) and sino-korean pronunciation. Finally I analyzed that Intermediate ‘ㅅ’ is used as a vehicle for avoiding hiatus.
