A Phonological Study on the 'li-' Irregular Conjugation

In this study I claimed that the stem of a certain verb had a latent segment '1' at the level of its lexical representation. Whether a verb stem had this latent segment or not, their surface form was appeared differrently as a regular form or a irregular form in their conjugational paradigm. In the i-final verb form, There were three kinds of forms which were finished as i-, li- and l∂- in Korean. The i-final verb stem was always surfaced as a i-deleted form before a vowel suffIX regularly. However Ii-final verb stem was surfaced with a double [-ll-] form as the result from i-deletion and I-addition concomitantly. This double [-ll-] appearance was discussed by many linguists before but their views about this irregular phenomenon were not identical with. In this paper I suggested that the reason why this double I-form was appeared in this case depended upon the properties of latent segment at the lexical form. As the latent segment was appeared before vowel suffix independently, this double I-form was generated as the output. If the stem final was not finished as li- with the latent segment '1' but lil-, its surface form had also a double I-form which was called l∂-irregular verb. This form was differentiated with the above by having not a stem final i -deletion. On the constraint based framework, they were derived by the ranking of constraints as follows; Syllable Contact》*[STRUC]o, NoCoda》Max(seg)》 Max(F)》 Align.
