This article is a review of pre-war writers' perception of post-war through Kim I-seok's novels- Kim I-seok is a representative pre-war writer who wrote the largest number of works in the 1950s. Whereas novels written by post-war generation writers express Western existentialism, those by pre-war generation writers express traditional Confucian humanism Kim I-seok's novels describe 'Well Confucian humanism. Their specific characteristics are as follows. His works have' characters of virtue.' Characters of virtue in his stories can be classified into 'faithfulness(忠)' and 'merciful(恕)' ones. 'Faithfulness' is to devote one's heart while 'mercy' is to understand others' heart by contemplating oneself. Characters in his works maintain their 'virtuous personality' by practicing the two kinds of virtue and ultimately realize Confucian humanism.
