The theme for this thesis is the changes and meanings of Baejges foreign policy. Within the history of the kingdom, the 6th Century can be seen as an important era that provided the springboard that help get back on its feet again internally and actively engage in diplomatic relations after Koguryo took their capital city of Hanseong(한성) in 475 and was forced to move to Wung-Jin(웅진) and entered a phase of shriveling in the mid 5th Century. Baekje had surrounded the Ran River and the Gaya region and engaged in foreign relations with China and Japan while confronting Koguryo and Silla. This paper will explain 6th Century Baekje foreign relations by dividing the era concerned into the former and latter phases of the Silla invasion of Daegaya in 562 and examine the changes of North-East Asian international relations between the SamGuk, China and Japan. The Silla invasion of Daegaya was selected as the focal point because this event greatly effected Baekjes foreign relations. The 562 fall of Daegaya brought great changes in Baekjes foreign policy. Before Daegayas fall, Baekje had established a Baekje-Gaya-Japan Line of Cooperation, and on occasion formed an alliance with Silla in order to stop Koguryos movement into the south. Amidst the political events and situation of the peninsula, Japan was able to ingest superior culture through Baekje. Therefore Baekje was able to provide Japan with a rich and superior culture and at the same time receive military aid against Koguryo and Silla. However, after the fall of Baekje-Daegayas line of cooperation was broken and Japan began to start engaging in foreign relations with not only, Baekje, but with the other nations of the peninsula. Therefore Baekje maintained its foreign relations with Japan by providing constant cultural assistance, and at the same time expanded their relations with China to maintain their national reputation and come out of its isolation.
