The purposes of this study are two fold: 1) to explore empirical patterns of inter-generational support exchange of adult children in Korea, and 2) to identify determinants of exchange patterns. Data from 1,106 men and women ages 30-59 with at least one living parent were analyzed. Support exchange patterns were classified based on level and direction of support flow and include reciprocal, children-receiving, children-supporting, and no exchange. Results indicate that the most predominant pattern of economic support is children-supporting, while emotional support is mainly reciprocal and instrumental support has a no-exchange pattern. Level of education and economic status of children and health status of parents were related to support exchange patterns. More reciprocal inter-generational exchange was associated with a high level of education and high economic status of children, and better health of parents.
