Some Remarks about Geographical Studies on Folk Housing along the Southern Coast and Archipelagoes of the Korean Peninsula

In this essay, the regional differentiation of some kinds of cultural features relating to the traditional housing was surveyed along the southern coast and its coastal archipelagoes of the Korean Peninsula. Points of this survey are as follows: Old types of features on the special aspects of housing such as room names, chimney structure of the Korean traditional floor heating system known as ondol, character of closed storeroom called malu or anchong, are found in common beyond the boundary to which different types of Korean traditional house plan are distributed, although house plan shows a striking difference between the coastal archipelagoes of South Cholla and South Kyongsang Provinces. One may suppose that common cultural aspects had spread over these two Provinces in ancient days, and after that, housing culture in South Kyongsang Province, accepting the advancing style of housing from the main parts of Central and Southern Region, prevailed and spread over, while the old type of housing has since restricted to the coastal archipelagoes of South Cholla Province.
