This paper investigates production of consonant clusters by Korean sixth graders. The students started learning English as a regular subject from the third grade in school. A total of 20 students were taped and examined with respect to how they handle difficult consonant clusters. The findings are: 1) Three member clusters are modified more frequently than two member clusters. 2) As reported by studies, coda clusters are more difficult than onset clusters. 3) Consonant deletion errors outnumbered vowel insertion errors. 4) More insertion errors occur in onset compared to deletion errors in coda. 5) Students read two consonant clusters more accurately in sentence lists, while they do better with three consonant clusters in individual word list. The patterns shown in this study are different from those of adults reported in other studies(Lee et al., 2002), in that the subjects show similar tendencies as children learning English as their first language. This study provides evidence for the markedness effects that playa role in interlanguage.
