A Review of the Korean Literature Related to Self-Determination: Future Directions and Practices for Promoting the Self-Determination of Students with Disabilities

장애인들의 삶의 질에 대한 관심이 증가함에 따라 장애인들의 독립성과 자율성을 촉진할 수 있는 자기결정이 장애인들을 위한 교육프로그램과 서비스의 중요한 요소로서 주목을 받아왔다. 이와 맥락을 같이하여 한국에서도 장애 학생들의 효과적인 통합과 전이를 위한 결정적인 요소 중 하나로서 자기결정에 대한 관심이 집중되면서 이에 대한 연구들이 최근 몇 년 동안 활발하게 이루어지고 있다. 자기결정에 대한 최근의 이러한 관심과 연구들을 고려할 때, 지금 우리가 자기결정에 대해서 알고 있는 것이 무엇인지 기존의 문헌들을 통하여 정리해보고, 앞으로 나아가야 할 방향들을 모색해보는 것이 후속연구들을 위해 중요할 것이라 사료된다. 이에 본 연구는 자기결정의 정의와 중요성에 대해서 간략히 살펴보고 자기결정에 관련된 한국의 최근 문헌들에 대한 문헌연구를 바탕으로 장애 학생의 자기결정을 증진시키기 위한 미래 방향과 실제에 대하여 모색해 보았다. 한국 문헌에서 발견되는 자기결정과 관련된 일련의 연구들은 다음과 같이 크게 네가지로 나뉘어 지 수있었다: (a) 자기결정과 특수교육의 중요 쟁점(예: 삶의 질, 통함, 전이, 조기교육, 가족참여)과의 관계; (b) 자기결정에 영향을 미치는 학생, 가족, 교사 등의 변인; (c) 자기결정을 증진시키기 위한 중재 및 교수 프로그램; (d) 자기결정의 하위 요소들을 이용한 교수방법에대한 연구들, 이들 주제에 대한 문헌연구들을 토대로 장애 학생의 자기결정을 증진시키기 위한미래 방향과 실제들이 (a) 자기결정에 대한 연구, (b) 장애 학생과 가족의 참여를 증진시키기 위한 역량 강좌, (c) 교육과 사회？, (d) 교사 교육의 측면에서 제시되었다. 장애인들의 삶의 질을 향상시키기 위하여, 그리고 이를 위한 보다 효과적인 통합과 전이를 위한 중요한 수단으로 자기결정이 지니고 있는 잠재적인 영향들을 고려해볼 때, 앞으로 장애학생의 자기결정을 증진시키기 위한 지속적인 연구들이 필요할 것이다. 나아가 자기결정의 개념이 서구문명을 기반으로 발달되어 왔다는 것을 고려하여, 특히 한국의 문화와 교육 현실 속에서 자기결정이 개념이 어떻게 하면 효과적으로 적용되고 바르게 뿌리내려져야 할 지에 대해서도 연구가 계속되어져야 할 것이다.

Self-determination has been highlighted in Korea in the last few years as a critical key for effective inclusion and transition to improve quality of life of students with disabilities. This article overviews the self-detemiination construct and examines the Korean literature base concerning self-determination in the following four topics: a) examinations of the relationships among self-detemination and other special education issues, (b) examinations of the impact of student, family, and teacher variables on self-determination, (c) interventions for promoting self-determination, and (d) interventions using components of self-determination. Based on the analysis of the literature, this article provides recommendations for future directions in research, student and family empowerment, educational and social policy, and teacher preparation to promote the self-determination of students with disabilities.
