As a result of the development in product markets new products are required within shorter periods. Theconcept of the Viennese trees. initially developed by W. Stahel; allows the integration of best known practisesof product development with a minimum of entrepreneurial risk. The method is based on eight "decision trees",which are connected with each other: The vision / need tree, the need / solution tree. the tree of social and cultural ecology, the function / use tree, the re-design tree, the energy tree, the material tree and the service tree. Two strategies of optimisation are additionally taken into account: The optimisation with the help ofavailable means and the optimisation by innovative solutions. In the first case an improvement up to the factor 4may be expected, in the second case an increase of efficiency by a factor 10 or mope can be reached. Theconcept also takes into account best -- prastise soluitions and the improvement of sustainable business-strategies. At preseint the authors try to adapt the method for a software based use in SMEs.
