Purpose : The purpose of this study was to identify the change patterns of sleep during the first two cycles of breast cancer chemotherapy. Method : The design of this study was a longitudinal descriptive study. The subjects of this study were 14 women who were receiving chemotherapy with AC(Adriamycin, Cytoxan) or AMF(Adriamycin, Mitotoxin, 5-Fluorourasil) after surgery for stage I or II/III breast cancer. The data were collected from September 1, 2001 to March 30, 2002. Sleepness Scale was used to collect data; two compassed three days at the time of chemotherapy treatments 1 and 2, and two encompassed three days at cycle 1 and 2 midpoint. Result : Total sleepness scores were significantly different over time, with scores lower at first treatments and increasing after that. The data revealed some particular individual types of sleep patterns named 'increasing pattern', 'Roller-Coaster pattern', 'Reverse roller-coster pattern' and 'decreasing pattern during first treatment and second midpoint'. Conclusion : This study provides knowledge to assist in development of scientifically based interventions to modify sleep related to chemotherapy treatment patterns.
