This paper examines and evaluates Jespersen's explanation and description of English grammar mainly in reference to his Essentials of English Grammar (1933). The English grammar in EEG and Jespersen's other writings is characterized as scholarly: it is descriptive and explanatory, syntactic categories are distinguished ftom notional categories and it utilizes the grammatical theory of word classes, three ranks, junction and nexus. The grammar is also practical: it provides plenty of examples and the explanations refer to various aspects of language, i.e., history, sound, and psychology. These characteristics are displayed in EEG with plain description and organization. From the modern linguistic point of view, Jespersen's grammatical theory and descriptions of case and tense fail to gain scientific precision and his examples are limited. However, these shortcomings are not significant enough to obscure his contribution to the understanding of English grammar nor to undermine the fact that he provides linguistic insights to contemporary scientific grammar.
