A Critical Review of Korean Family and Women's Studies in Hyo Chae Lee

This paper critically examines Korean family and women's studies in Hyo Chae Lee from the 1960s to the present to explore the dilemma of researchers in the Third W orid. Three main points are discussed. First, the structural-functionalist approach shifted to post-colonial feminism. Second, some research has been free of Western theories and is instead based upon various theories and concepts consistent with the feminist viewpoint in the Third World. Third, there has been a reappearance of family history starting in the 1980s, particularly studies of Korean family history as it relates to the political-economic system.
