This paper is on the philosophy of Jang Hyungang: one of the famous neo-confucianists in the Chosun dynasty. He belongs to T'oegye School, which was one of the two prominent(and rivalry) schoo Is through the whole dynasty. His philosophy was, nevertheless, dif ferent from T' oegye' s. First of all, he emphasized the unity of Li(principle) and Ch'i(material force). He thought that Tao, the universal process which all beings including the human must follow, is accomplished by the unity of Li and Ch'i. He compared Li and Ch'i to warp and woof. As a textile is woven the combination of warps an d woofs, Tao is fulfilled by combining Li and Ch'i. Ch'i is the pro duct of Li. Nevertheless, In this process of universal development, Li is materialized and realized through Chi. In this sense, Chi is a kind of matter which completes Li.
