The learning of Confucian proprieties(禮) of Yeoheon

The learning of Confucian proprieties(ye,禮) of Yeoheon(Jang, Hyun-kwang) has not been comprehensively studied yet. This paper analyzes his learning of Confucian proprieties and offers an explanation for the contents and characteristics of it. Some of them are as follow: the origin of his learning, his works, foundation of his thought s, and conceptions and theories of Confucian proprieties. This paper shows that the items analyzed for explaining the concept of ye are five permanents (osang, 五常), golden mean(Jung,中), and kyung(敬). From the viewpoint of his learning, the Confucian proprieties are the absolute and indispensable one for realizing the Ultimate way of Confucianism. Therefore, studying and practicing the Confucian proprieties is necessary and absolute to recover the ideals of Confucianism. His understanding of Confucian proprieties, as will be shown in t his paper, is not limited to formal norms. Rather it is based on human nature and mind ontologically and epistemologically. So his attitude in the practice of ye is not restricted to fulfilling formal norm s of Confucian proprieties, but is spread in order to adjust and change the customs of the age into Confucian proprietiesby interpreting Confucian proprieties more broadly, which are different from Confucian proprieties. Yeoheon applied norm of Confucian proprieties, e. g, ancestor worship, to his society of the wartime. This paper also shows that he extended sphere of rational lives 0 f the literati in the Chosun Dynasty in the 17th century, in accordance with the ideas of Confucian proprieties.
