A study on Chinese poetry of Korean students studying in Japan in the period of patriotic enlightenment(愛國啓蒙期)

본고는 애국계몽기의 한시가 지난 민족의 각성이라는 큰 주제를 인정하면서 다양한 스펙트럼에 주목할 수 있는 작업의 일환으로 在日 留學生의 한시를 살피려 한다. 먼저 그들의 유학에 대한 인식과 사명감을 살피면서, 이들은 유학이 조국의 독립을 획득할 수 있는 중요한 방법으로 인식하고 있었고, 아울러 이러한 인식은 대다수 유학생들이 공유하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 그러한 인식을 전제로 개인적 이익보다는 공익을 우선시하고 있었음을 확인하였다. 이들은 또한 일본의 여러 문물을 살피는 데 애우 적극적이었다. 知彼知己의 인식이 바탕이 되며 국권의 회복을 위해 일본에 대한 공부가 꼭 필요한 것임을 감지하였던 것이다. 한편으로 이 시기 한서의 중요한 흐름이라고 할 수 있는 국권회복에 대한 염원 또한 확인된다. 고국을 떠 나있는 상황에서 비롯되는 향수는 국권회복에 대한 염원을 더욱 증폭시켜 주는 것으로 보인다. 이들의 한시라고 해서 형식적으로 특별한 것은 확인되지 않는다. 전통적 형식을 잘 계승하면서 자신들의 주제를 담아내려 하였다고 보는 것이 온당할 것이다. 寓言詩와 集句詩 등에서 이러한 경향이 확인된다. 그러면서도 한글로 脚韻한다든지 諺文風月을 활용하는 등의 형식적 변화를 시도하면서 한시의 難讀性을 뛰어넘으려는 시도를 보이고 있다는 점이 주목된다. 일본의 제도와 문물에 찬탄을 보내고 있는 작품들을 어떻게 볼 것인가하는 점에 대해서는 좀 더 심사숙고할 필요가 있다.

In this paper, I studied Chinese poetry of Korean students studying in Japan in the period of patriotic enlightenment. I recognize that the main subject of their poems was a national awakening. I tried to examine many other aspects of their poems in this paper. First of all, I examined their understanding of studying abroad and their sense of duty. They understood that studying abroad was an important way to win independence of their mother county. Most of Korean students studying in Japan thought like this in common. Based on that understanding, they valued public interest above private interest. They also looked into Japanese culture and institutions positively. They knew that if we understand the enemy and understand ourselves, then we will be ever-victorious. So they perceived that studying Japan was necessary to regain national power. On the other hand, I could find their wish for regaining national power(this was an important stream of poetry in this period) in their poems. I thoght their homesickness amplified their wish for regaining national power. I couldn’t find some formal peculiarity in their poems. It is proper to say that, succeeding to traditional form of Chinese poetry, they tried to express their thought in it. Poems of an allegory and poems of collecting famous phrases prove this fact. At the same time, they attempted to give some variety formally in their poems by rhyming lines with the Korean alphabet or taking advantage of poetry of the Korean letters. I think they tried to overcome unintelligible of Chinese poetry by these attempts. How should we understand some poems praising Japanese culture and institutions highly? I have got to think more deeply about this question.
