Exploring Study on the Extraction of Port Competitiveness Components and Evaliation Structure under the Consideration of Competitive Situation among Ports in Korea and China

Due to the rapid changes in world trade and shipping environment, today's ports face ever-increasing competition, from adjacent competing ports. In particular, it is well known that competition among countries in Northeast Asia, especially Korea and China, is a most striking phenomenon. To be a hub port in Northeast Asia, Chinese government has intensively invested in port development. Further, these development projects are significantly big scale, compared with those projects which Korea has. Thus, China is beginning to threaten Koran ports, especially Busan port which try to be a hub port in Northeast Asia. For this reason, in recent years it has been very important issue to identify and evaluate competitiveness among major ports in Korea and China. The aim of this research is to identify elements relevant to port competitiveness between Korea and China, and to establish port evaluation structure based on identified elements. To achieve this aim of research, various literatures to be related port selection elements and port competition were reviewed, and then questionnaire based on elements extracted from those literatures were designed. Data were collected through surveys of experts and practitioners including shipping companies and ship owners in Korea and China, and were analyzed. Finally, from the results of data analysis, elements relevant to port competitiveness between Korea and China and port evaluation structure were presented.
