Left dislocation: it's information structure and discourse effect

The objective of this study is two fold: i) to investigate the information structure of a french syntactic construction called "left dislocation" ; and ii) to ponder upon its discourse effect. On the information board, we can consider "left dislocation" as a combination set of old and new informations. Left-dislocated NP represents old information from previous context or given in discourse situation. The "given" nature in this case refers to Clark-given, that is information obtained based on our worldly common knowledge. The clause following a left-dislocated NP consists of new information that a speaker adds to given left-dislocated NP. Discourse effects which a speaker can obtain from a left dislocation construction are analysed as pertaining to "contrastive" effects. Actually, examples found in speech chains supported this view. Elements in contrast are definable according to discourse situations. They are comparable elements of a set presupposed in the context/situation of an utterance.
