The french structure X, c'est Y is often interpreted as a definition in ordinary speech situation. However, it does not contain any metalinguistic expressions used in normal defining sentences, such as signifier, avoir le sens de, etc. The objective of this study is therefore to search for the factors that enables this structure to perform defining acts. By putting together general properties of the structure and conditions to satisfy in order to act as defining sentences, we could single out the fact that there are similarities between the two forms. In particular, when X has a double interpretation of autonymic and referential reading, the structure X, c'est Y acts indirectly as a defining sentence of lexical element X.
