The (28,24) Reed-Solomon codes with an interleaved scheme are used for the error correction of the optical disc system. Direct decoding method offers advantages of calculating error positions and error values without error-locator polynomial. Representation of finite field GF(Z^m) using normal basis reduces the complexity of multiplication or inverse over GF(Z^m). In this paper, an efficient decoding circuit of (28,24) Reed-Solomon codes which is applicable to the optical disc system is proposed and simulated by using VHDL. This designed Reed-Solomon decoder can correct double or single symbol errors with the same decoding circuit.
